Sydney McWhinney entered UTS in 1910 and later attended Upper Canada College, where he was a member of the Cadet Corps. He enlisted in September 1915, joining the 34th Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery. He went overseas that December and was offered a commission in a British regiment but refused it in order to remain with his fellow Canadians. He arrived in France in March of 1916 with the Trench Mortar Battery. He was wounded at Ypres and died just over three weeks later in the University College Hospital in London. His body was returned to Toronto, and he is one of the nine UTS boys who died during the war to be buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. His brother Harry, also a UTS boy, survived the war.
